Why Get Involved?

For Students
The students are able to express their stories and share their lives in their own words, without the interference of the mainstream media. In addition, they are shown that what they have to share is important and that people care about them. Furthermore, students are able to see that they are not alone and that there are people that have share similar lived experiences and ideas about the world that they otherwise might not have noticed. Thus, a type of community and sharing develops.

For Teachers
The teachers will be able to better understand the experiences of their African-American students and also will be able to connect what they are learning/studying in the classroom to both the film as well as their students’ lives. The project will be tied to specific state standards, like Visual Arts, Performing Arts, English Language Arts, Social Studies, etc., which will allow the teachers to meet their requirements. Some of the questions ask the students to talk about/reflect on their educational experiences and this type of feedback will help the teachers know how they can better engage students with material that they like and want to learn more about.
